Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young toddler. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
